In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
National and local Police Week 2026 events are listed on the Police Officers Labor Council (POLC) Events Calendar. Check the POLC Calendar often for updates as events are announced in the weeks leading up to the official National Police Week dates of May 10-16, 2026. Please note that some events are scheduled in advance of the official dates.
The 2026 "Roll Call of Heroes" Engraving Ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. EST April 21 at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The names of 109 officers who died in the line of duty in 2025, and 254 officers who died in previous years will be inscribed on the Memorial from April 21 through the end of the month. After these additions, there will be a total of 24,775 officers’ names engraved on the Memorial, representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, federal law enforcement, campus and military police agencies, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). The names of the 363 officers who made the ultimate sacrifice will be read aloud during the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil at 8 p.m. on May 13th. The Vigil, which will be held on the National Mall, will be live streamed on YouTube; Facebook; LinkedIn; and Twitter.
“As we come together to honor the officers we’ve lost, we reflect not only on their sacrifice, but on the commitment that called them to serve,” said William Alexander, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. “Their bravery and dedication leave a lasting mark on our nation and on all who follow in their footsteps. This is a moment to remember their stories, support their loved ones, and carry their legacy forward with enduring respect.”
