REGISTER FOR NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2024 EVENTS
May 08, 2024

By POJ Editor Jennifer Gomori

Register today for National Police Week 2024 events in Washington D.C. this May. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and other event organizers have opened online registration.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, National Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Beginning April 8, the names of 282 officers who died in the line of duty will be engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Of those officers, 118 died in 2023, a 49 percent reduction in duty deaths compared to 2022. The other 164 officers died in years prior to 2023. These law enforcement officers will be honored during the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil held on the National Mall at 8 p.m. on May 13, 2024.

While the official dates of National Police Week are May 12-18, 2024, some events are planned several days in advance. Visit the Police Officers Labor Council (POLC) website Calendar for links to register to participate in individual events, signup to be a volunteer, register for Honor Guard and Ceremonial Motor Escort opportunities, and plan your stay. There are also opportunities to sponsor National Police Week.

Concerns for Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) website has online registration for National Police Week. Discounted hotel rooms can be reserved through the Fraternal Order of Police by clicking here. NAPO members attending TOP COPS Awards Dinner and NAPO Legislative Awards Luncheon may reserve discounted rooms at the Omni Shoreham Hotel by clicking here.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum are seeking volunteers for activities such as putting out wreaths along the Memorial walls, working at the National Law Enforcement Museum, assisting during the Candlelight Vigil and more. Volunteers will receive training, a T-shirt, and a free admission ticket to the Museum. To volunteer, please email volunteer@nleomf.org with your full name, email address, phone number and hours of availability.

To stay connected during National Police Week, download the new "National Police Week 2024" app by searching your app store.

Locally, Police Week Michigan, a citizen project supporting Michigan Law Enforcement, is encouraging residents to ask their local City Council, County Commission or Township leadership to pass a resolution honoring Police Week this year.
