The U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security is holding a second hearing on the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) today, April 16th.
This hearing will focus on repealing the two provisions, how the repeal will impact the Social Security Trust Fund, and the best way to address the inequity of the GPO and WEP.
NAPO sought member statements in November 2023 supporting the repeal of WEP and GPO and is requesting members to resubmit those statements for the record to drive home the point that the GPO and WEP are detrimental for millions of public sector retirees. If you did not previously submit a letter or written statement to the Committee, please consider doing so before the end of the month.
The Committee will accept comments through close of business Tuesday, April 30th. Anyone impacted by the GPO and WEP, including family members, are asked to submit comments now to WMSubmission@mail.house.gov with the subject line “Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset.” Comments must be submitted as a Word document attached to the email and include a list of all persons and/or organizations who are submitting the comments in the Word document. Your email must include your name, organization (if applicable), address, and telephone number. Please copy NAPO’s Governmental Affairs Director, Andy Edmiston, at aedmiston@napo.org on the email.
NAPO will be including all previously submitted comments in their written testimony for the April 16th hearing. The Committee’s next step is to markup H.R. 82 and every story shared will make a difference and help support NAPO's efforts.
