KAROUB REPORT – APRIL 2024
Apr 30, 2024

Legislative committees have been busy reporting budget bills over the past few weeks, as the House and Senate continue to work on the state’s fiscal year 2025 budget. The Legislature must pass and present appropriations bills to Governor Gretchen Whitmer by July 1 with the budget taking effect Oct. 1st.

Democrats have regained control of the Michigan House of Representatives. The 54-54 party split comes to an end April 30, when Representatives-elect Peter Herzberg (D-Westland) and Mia Xiong (D-Warren) are sworn in. Herzberg and Xiong won the special elections for House districts 13 and 25 on April 16.

All 110 seats in the Michigan House are up for election this year along with the U.S. President, one U.S. Senator and 13 U.S. Representatives representing Michigan, among other state and local races. The primary election is Aug. 6, with early in-person voting open July 27 to August 4. The general election will be held Nov. 5, with early voting available from Oct. 26 through Nov. 3.

Gregory Eaton was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Gov. Whitmer, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, coaches Tom Izzo and Nick Saban, and other notable public figures joined the Wayne County Commission on April 23 in presenting the award to Eaton, who is an entrepreneur, businessman, Civil Rights advocate, mentor, and Karoub Associates of counsel.

The Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is in the process of redrawing Michigan Senate districts 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, and 11. Four versions are currently in the works. The Commission must adopt a final map and send it to the U.S. District Court by June 27.
