President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) into law Jan. 5, restoring Social Security benefits to millions of public servants.
NAPO issued a statement thanking the President for his support: “This is the culmination of over 30 years of NAPO efforts to repeal the GPO and WEP. We are grateful to be invited to the White House in recognition of our successful efforts to get this bill across the finish line. We extend our sincere thanks to House and Senate leadership for ushering this bill through before the end of the 118th Congress.”
Following Senate approval of the legislation Dec. 21, 2024, NAPO’s Director of Governmental Affairs Andrea Edmiston issued a statement thanking members for reaching out to their legislators and thanking Senators Brown and Collins and Representatives Graves and Spanberger for their “tireless efforts” to pass H.R. 82.
“With the passage of this bill Congress has acted to end over 40 years of the federal government taking the hard-earned benefits of our nation’s law enforcement officers and public servants. The repeal of the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) will preserve the retirement security of those who chose to selflessly serve and protect our communities. NAPO has been fighting to pass the Social Security Fairness Act for nearly 30 years and we could not have done this without your help and advocacy. Thank you!"
