Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave her State of the State address last night, Feb. 26, before a joint session of the House and Senate, highlighting her plans for lowering costs, creating jobs, and investing in roads and education, among other things. Some of her priorities include reducing medical debt; taxing vapes; simplifying the state’s permitting and licensing systems; and long-term roads funding, which includes tax increases and funding cuts in other areas.

Gov. Whitmer released her Executive Budget recommendation for the next fiscal year (October 1 – September 30) ahead of delivering the State of the State address. Her 2026 budget proposal totals $83.5 billion, which includes a general fund total of $15.3 billion and a school aid budget of $21.2 billion.
