The Michigan House and Senate, the Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General will all be on the ballot this year, in addition to all 13 of Michigan’s congressional races. The following are some considerations on the 2022 elections: The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) is moving forward with approved maps for all three elected positions that involve districts, although numerous groups have initiated court challenges to these maps; There are four scheduled special elections to replace former-Representative Mark Huizenga (now Senator Huizenga), former-Representative Doug Wozniak (now Senator Wozniak), former-
Representative Andrea Schroeder (deceased), and former-Representative Abdullah Hammoud (now Mayor of Dearborn). The primary will be held March 1st and the General Election on May 3rd, with the terms going until the end of this calendar year; With the new districts potentially set in the Michigan House of Representatives, a greater number of the 110 seats will be more competitive in the 2022 election than any time in our state’s history. According to Gongwer News Service, 36 of the seats are solid/likely Democratic, while 43 are solid/likely Republican, leaving 31 competitive seats in play; Several members of the state Senate have been drawn into the same district. Senators Adam Hollier and Stephanie Chang will go head-to-head in the primary for the 3rd Senate District, as will Senators Mallory McMorrow and Marshall Bullock for the 8th. State Representative Darrin Camilleri has announced his intention to run for the 4th Senate District and the downriver seat leans democratic for the General Election; With redistricting changing the congressional maps drastically, some colleagues may be running against each other in the primaries. Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence has announced her retirement, leading Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib to run in the redrawn 12th House District; Governor Gretchen Whitmer is entering the election year from a position of strength, with no announced primary opponent and over $10 million in her campaign account. With 12 announced candidates on the Republican side, there are only three or four with any chance at winning the nomination and being competitive in the General Election; In the Attorney General and Secretary of State races, each party chooses their candidate through the convention process. The Democrats’ candidates will be the current incumbents. On the Republican side, former-President Donald Trump has endorsed community college professor Kristina Karamo for Secretary of State. The other candidate on the Republican side considered a serious contender would be state Representative Beau LaFave.
