Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation aimed at retaining police officers to keep communities safe. Law enforcement agencies may now enter into agreements to collect reimbursement for all or part of the cost of an employee’s academy training, based on the length of service, if the employee voluntarily departs the agency within four years of completing academy training.

On May 25, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released the National Accreditation Standards, which will be used to determine if a law enforcement agency accreditation entity qualifies as an “authorized, independent credentialing body” pursuant to Section 19 of the President’s Executive Order on police and criminal justice reform.

Weiler Scholarship Awards for taking the lead and inspiring their fellow classmates. Garrett Lauzon and James Lietzow were honored with the $500 Awards during Macomb Police Academy’s graduation ceremony Dec. 19, 2022.

On May 18, during a markup in honor of National Police Week, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved by voice vote four of NAPO’s priority bills: the Recruit and Retain Act, the Project Safe Neighborhoods Reauthorization Act, the COPS on the Beat Grant Program Parity Act, and the Strong Communities Act.
