In honor of National Police Week, the House passed the Recruit and Retain Act, S. 546, with a strong bipartisan 370 – 18 vote, sending it to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The bill passed the Senate in July 2023.

By Jennifer Gomori, POJ Editor The Police Officers Labor Council (POLC) honored two graduates of Macomb Community College Police Academy as the first Robert Figurski Award recipients.  Cadets Alex Roberts and Luxie Kouza each received the $500 awards named in honor of POLC/GELC Labor Representative Robert Figurski, who served as the Unions’ Director from May 2016 until June 2023.

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) President Mick McHale released a statement after one of the deadliest days for law enforcement occurred on Monday, April 29, 2024: On Monday, our nation saw one of the deadliest days for law enforcement when eight law enforcement officers were shot, four of whom were killed, while serving a warrant in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Legislative committees have been busy reporting budget bills over the past few weeks, as the House and Senate continue work on the state’s fiscal year 2025 budget. The Legislature must pass and present appropriations bills to Governor Gretchen Whitmer by July 1 with the budget taking effect Oct. 1st. Democrats have regained control of the Michigan House of Representatives.

The 39-year-old married father of a 1-1/2-year-old son decided it was time to take the final step to become a law enforcement officer.

Operator 1 = Increased from varying wages based on experience to $22.
