This past week, NAPO met with staff of House Democratic and Republican leadership to discuss the pro-law enforcement legislation we want to see moved during National Police Week this year to honor the law enforcement profession.

Learn about the new POLC/GELC Executive Committee members and the departure of the longest serving board member in the Winter 2024 Police Officers Journal. Following the POLC/GELC Labor Seminar & Conference last September, two members joined the Executive Committee and the Committee Chairman departed. The date and location for the 2024 Annual POLC/GELC Conference have been set.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer presented her recommendations for a balanced fiscal year 2025 state budget on Feb. 7, which totals $80.7 billion and includes $14.3 billion in General Fund and $19 billion in School Aid monies. The budget focuses on improving public safety and public health, lowering costs, economic development, expanding education opportunities and rebuilding the infrastructure.

The House is considering bringing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) reauthorization bill to the floor for a vote next week that would be a cleaner reauthorization that does not include controversial provisions. Seven POLC-represented law enforcement agencies along with the Michigan Attorney General‘s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) were granted accreditation by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (MLEAC). Attorney General Dana Nessel announced on Feb.

NAPO has serious concerns with President Biden’s nominee to be a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Adeel A. Mangi, who was narrowly approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Jan. 18.
