Michigan’s primary election was held on Aug. 6 with voters determining who will be on the November General Election ballot for seats in the Michigan House, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House.  Most Michigan House incumbents running for re-election defeated their opponents in the primary, except for Representative Neil Friske (R-Charlevoix) and Representative Bob Bezotte, Jr. (R-Howell).

By Jennifer Gomori, POJ Editor Midland County Deputies and Detectives were feeling stuck with their former longtime Union and chose Police Officers Labor Council to help them move forward. The 21-member group had been with their former union, Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM), for at least 30 years when they voted to join the POLC in October 2023.

Excerpted from National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Law enforcement line-of-duty deaths by mid-year 2024 have increased by 15 percent nationally when compared to the first half of 2023, with firearms-related deaths as the leading cause of those fatalities, according to preliminary data provided by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

The House Judiciary Committee approved the Pretrial Release Reporting Act (H.R. 2833) on June 27. This bill would require the Department of Justice (DOJ) to issue a report to Congress within 180 days detailing information on individuals released on bail and pretrial release from state courts charged with violent felony offenses.

The Michigan Legislature passed the fiscal year 2024-2025 state budget on June 27, which consists of general appropriations for state departments and education appropriations for school aid, community colleges, and higher education.

NAPO pledged its support for the Educational and Career Opportunities for Public Safety (EdCOPS) Act (S. 4450), which creates the Public Safety Officer Education Assistance Program under the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs.
